Professionals in public and mental health and social service related professions have often promoted social actions and policies aimed at older adults which revolved around the view that failing health is a consequence of aging. It is now clear that it is possible to postpone or even prevent much of the age-related decline in health that was once thought inevitable. Future policies must integrate a changing paradigm emphasizes the importance of attention to the economic, political, and institutional factors that perpetuate poverty and undermine healthful aging among certain groups.
